Dr. Gregory Sumner will speak about his book DETROIT IN WWII, exploring life in the Motor City during its days as the capital of the “Arsenal of Democracy” against fascism. Production miracles, civil defense drills, scrap drives, juke boxes, ballrooms, movie theatres, newsreels, and sports are part of the story, with a cast of characters that includes Edsel Ford, Rosie the Riveter, Charles Lindbergh, Joe Louis, and Hank Greenberg.
The shipyard at Wyandotte launched the first iron and steel vessels on the lakes, with innovations that included the first icebreaking hull. Ric Mixter shares several of the hulls launched here, but their memory was tarnished by shipwreck. This includes Alvin Clarke, Sport, SR Kirby, Chicora, Sydney Smith, JR and Tashmoo.
